A note from Sean about the show...
I was 21 years old in late summer 1993, living in Westchester with my parents for the first time since I was thirteen. Five years of boarding school, including a year in Europe, was immediately followed by getting kicked out of college twice in three semesters, which left me working at Tower Records in Yonkers. New York City was in the midst of an historic surge of crack-fueled violence and racial tension as one of the closest and most hotly contested mayoral elections in the history of the city lurched towards its climax.
Through connections my father had from his days as a producer at NBC in Chicago, I got a job shooting breaking news overnight in New York City as a one-man camera crew. From eight at night to eight in the morning I filmed whatever happened and then sold it to all six morning news
programs.
After spending my entire adult life in nearly absolute silence about my experiences on the street, I got a therapist and began writing my story. I was blessed to meet actor and director Shae D’lyn, who agreed to direct the project in preparation for the United Solo Festival in NYC that fall -
where we won the Best Storyteller Prize.
If It Bleeds It Leads is my true coming of age story chasing mayhem, murder, and love full speed behind the wheel of an auctioned-off cop car on the streets of the biggest media market in the world. More an exploration into the American caste systems of money, privilege, and race than a blood-soaked orgy of violence, If It Bleeds It Leads stands as a love letter to a New York City best described as the Wild West.
Sean Allison is a writer, producer, performer, musician, and the founder of Small Potatoes Playhouse. Shae D’lyn is an accomplished actor (Dharma and Greg, Boardwalk Empire) and currently works with her own theater production company, Winged Monkeys.
Shae and I are both so very grateful for your interest in our show. Have a nice day.
- Sean
